Jay Baruchel

Jonathan Adam Saunders Baruchel is a Canadian actor. He is known for his voice role as Hiccup Haddock in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, and for his roles in comedy movies such as Knocked Up (2007), Tropic Thunder (2008), Fanboys (2009), She’s Out of My League (2010), Goon (2011), This Is the End (2013), and the action-fantasy film The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (2010). He had lead roles as Steven Karp in Judd Apatow’s comedy series Undeclared (2001–2002) and Josh Greenberg in the FXX comedy series Man Seeking Woman (2015–2017).

Baruchel had a lead role as BlackBerry co-founder Mike Lazaridis in the black comedy film, BlackBerry (2023).

Jay Baruchel Biography

The son of antiques dealer Serge Baruchel and freelance writer Robyne (née Ropell), Baruchel was born in Ottawa, Ontario. He has a younger sister and was raised in Montréal, Quebec’s Notre-Dame-de-Grâce neighborhood. Paris, France is the birthplace of his father. Baruchel’s background is composed of French and Irish-Catholics, with a quarter being Jewish. He has declared that County Mayo is where he thinks his Irish ancestry lies.

Career

Baruchel was only twelve when he landed his first acting role. In 1996, he had one of his first significant acting roles on the local television show My Hometown. He co-hosted Popular Mechanics for Kids with Elisha Cuthbert from 1997 to 1998. Following a brief cameo in Cameron Crowe’s Oscar-winning film Almost Famous, Baruchel was cast as Steven Karp in Judd Apatow’s critically acclaimed but brief television series Undeclared, starring Charlie Hunnam, Seth Rogen, Monica Keena, and Carla Gallo. Next, he made an appearance in Roger Avary’s The Rules of Attraction alongside James Van Der Beek.

In Clint Eastwood’s Million Dollar Baby from 2004, Baruchel portrayed boxing hopeful Danger Barch. After that, Baruchel starred in Nemesis Game and Fetching Cody. In 2005, she costarred with Don Johnson on the WB series Just Legal, and in 2006, she made a brief appearance on the CBS drama Numb3rs.

Baruchel starred with Jack Black, Nick Nolte, Steve Coogan, and Robert Downey Jr. in the Ben Stiller-directed Tropic Thunder, I’m Reed Fish, Just Buried, and Knocked Up (which brought him back together with Judd Apatow, Jason Segel, and Seth Rogen). He co-starred with Seth Rogen in the 2007 trailer for Jay and Seth versus the Apocalypse, which Rogen and Evan Goldberg produced in an attempt to raise money and interest for a larger-scale, comparable project that was eventually released in 2013 under the title This Is the End. He was on Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist in 2008. In Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian, he also had a cameo.

The Trotsky, DreamWorks’ She’s Out of My League (against Alice Eve), and the live-action Disney version of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice were among the movies in which Baruchel starred in 2010. In addition, he provided the voice of the lead character in the highly regarded animated film How to Train Your Dragon. This part has been carried over into the franchise’s television adaptation. He appeared in two supporting roles in the Canadian comedy series The Drunk and On Drugs Happy Fun Time Hour in 2010 as well. He wrote the screenplay for the movie Goon, in which Evan Goldberg portrayed his own character, Johnny Klutz. Seann William Scott and Eugene Levy, two more Canadian actors, co-star in the film Goon.

Relationship

From 2011 to 2013, Baruchel and actress Alison Pill were engaged. He made reference to their split on February 16, 2013, via a tweet. Baruchel proposed to his girlfriend Rebecca-Jo Dunham in May of 2018. On September 21, 2019, they tied the knot in Portugal. According to Baruchel, he is “probably agnostic”.

In honor of his Irish ancestry, Baruchel has multiple tattoos, including a red Maple Leaf on his left pectoral that appears in the films Fanboys, Knocked Up, Tropic Thunder, and This Is the End.

Since the early 2000s, Baruchel has been a fan of the Scottish football team Celtic. In 2016, he co-produced a documentary that chronicled his journey to developing feelings for the team.
